SWLF Synergy R™ Self- Ligating System

The latest breakthrough in orthdontics is the self-ligating braces .In combination with high technology wires, much more gentle force is applied to the teeth, which results in shorter treatment time and far fewer adjustments. The results are beautiful smiles and enchanced facial aesthetics.

There are many types available in the market such as SWLF Synergy R, Damon, Speed and In-Ovation.

At Prestige, Dr Chay uses the SWLF Synergy R from Rocky Mountain Orthodontics, USA.

SWLF Synergy R™ provides many advantages over self ligating brackets currently on the market:

  • Patients still have their choice of colors on the front braces
  • Fully convertible to the traditional braces
  • No moving parts -no clips, doors or slides ( no breakable components)
  • Low profile for patient comfort
  • Fewer appointments required

The SWLF Synergy R™ is a combination of Synergy® Bracket with their patented convertible tube technology. Convertible MIM caps are provided on the cuspid and bicuspid brackets. Anterior brackets are provided with the traditional (no cap) Synergy design for patients to choose their favorite color ligature/rubber bands.

Its convertibility to traditional braces is one of its main advantages for patients who, during their treatment, decide to study or migrate overseas or to move back to their home countries (expats). Their new orthodontists would still be able to carry on treatment without the need to change its system if they do not practice this latest technology.

The SWLF Synergy R™ allows our patients to enjoy different colours on their braces every visit without imposing large friction between the braces and wires due to the presence of the specially designed caps on the brackets’ slots.

The SWLF Synergy R™ provides the ultimate in flexibility, acting as a virtually frictionless bracket when unconverted with fewer appointments needed, thus reducing the overall treatment time or as a standard bracket when the tube door is removed.

  • Durable, translucent ceramic bracket
  • Potential for fewer and faster appointments
  • Smooth, molded, comfortable edges
  • Self-Ligating

Functional Appliances

Most children with crowded teeth and bad bites have narrow jaws and underdeveloped lower jaws, which could be corrected with functional appliances. Functional appliances help correct the bone problems, while the tooth problems are corrected with the orthodontic braces. The ideal age for the use of functional appliances is during the pubertal spurt which ranges from age 9 to 12, when the cooperation level is the highest.

The functional appliances used in our clinic are the Twin Blocks (removable appliances) and Herbst appliance (fixed appliances).

Twin Blocks

type9

This functional appliance consists of two bite blocks, upper and lower, which interlock at 70°. Twin Blocks™ are designed so the mandible is recessive. This is a comfortable appliance to wear as patients rarely have problems speaking or eating with the appliance.

The activation of the midline screws assist with the transverse development. Since 80% of Class II malocclusions have deficient mandibles, the Twin Block™ is a must for the treatment of the majority of Class II cases for young patients who are good cooperators.

HERBST APPLIANCE

The Herbst appliance is very effective in correcting large overbites due to small lower jaws in patients who are growing. The Herbst appliance is used to enhance the growth of the lower jaw in a forward direction, while at the same time applying pressure to the upper jaw in a backwards direction. Expansion may also be achieved in the upper jaw if desired.

A tube and rod work together similar to a shock absorber to connect the upper and lower jaws. This does not interfere with opening and closing the mouth or with eating. Side to side movement is somewhat restricted. The Herbst appliance is cemented on the back molars and is in place and active 24 hours a day. It is generally worn full time for 12 months along with front braces. Once it is removed, braces are added to the side teeth for an additional 12 months to complete tooth alignment.

Reverse Headgear

type13

The Reverse Headgear is a removable appliance for patients where the upper jaw is not growing fast enough, resulting in a crossbite or underbite. The device consists of a metal bar attached to pads on the forehead and chin with rubber bands hooked to the face mask and the upper braces to gradually move the upper jaw forward. Patient compliance is extremely important as the face mask must be worn a set number of hours per day or more to obtain the desired results. The face mask device is generally worn for 6-12 months.

For the results to be successful, patient compliance is of the utmost importance. It may take several days to become accustomed to the appliance. With practice, it will become easier to place and remove the reverse headgear. We will determine the length of time you should wear your headgear, but it is generally 10-14 hours per day, which can include wearing while you sleep. You should not wear your headgear while participating in sporting activities.

type14Sometimes your chin may get irritated from the headgear. If this happens, you should always keep the area clean and often change the insert in the chin cup. If the skin becomes very dry, the use of moisturizing cream twice a day can be helpful. If your jaw joints are extremely sore or you cannot open and close your mouth without difficulty, stop wearing the appliance and contact us for further instructions as we may need to fit you with a different appliance. Also, if your headgear breaks or is bent, call us so we can fit you in with a repair appointment so your treatment will not be delayed.

Things to remember

  • Bring Your Reverse Headgear To Every Appointment so that it can be checked and adjusted. Each reverse headgear is custom fit and adjusted, you should not change yours in any way, without consulting us first.
  • Tender Teeth are normal the first few days the headgear is worn. Don’t be discouraged, because the tenderness will disappear as you adjust to the new pressure. Wear it consistently, and do not put it on and off. Please inform us if your discomfort is longer that one week.
  • Do not under any circumstances play with your reverse headgear on or allow others to snap or pull on it. Mistreatment of your reverse headgear could result in harm to you or someone else. Always remove the strap or elastics before removing the reverse headgear.
  • Never wear your reverse headgear when running swimming, or playing contact sports.

It may not be fun wearing your reverse headgear, but it is necessary in some cases. Wearing your reverse headgear can help prevent the future need of having permanent teeth removed or jaw surgery. You can enjoy a lifetime of benefits from a few moments of sacrifice.
